Explore a quarter of a century of hospitality experiences in the Caribbean.

Where it all began: Punta Cana - 2000

Our story began in 2000, when we — then known as The Excellence Group — opened our very first adults-only escape, pioneering a new standard of All Inclusive luxury in the hospitality industry. Excellence Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic was both the first property to be built in Punta Cana and our first property for Excellence Resorts.

Our first Mexican escape - 2004

With several years of success and customer satisfaction, The Excellence Collection went on to create its first Mexican experience for adults only. This would be set amidst the secluded sands of the Riviera Maya, just a short drive down from Cancun. This is Excellence Riviera Cancun, which opened its doors to guests in 2004.

The origins of an iconic escape - 2007

Many guests who have stayed in Excellence Resorts believe Excellence Playa Mujeres to be the most iconic example of the brand’s hospitality and ambiance. Known for its longtime staff and its classic vibes, the resort has been enhanced over the years, but it has retained that warm feeling that it quickly became known for when it opened in 2007. Now Excellence Playa Mujeres is known as one of the most famous resorts in Mexico.

Love found its perfect retreat: Beloved Hotels - 2009

The only hotel in the brand has become known for its romantic vibes and quiet setting. Yet many are unaware that originally this hotel went by a different name and had a different concept entirely.
Beloved Playa Mujeres was previously known as “La Amada Hotel” and began as an all-ages getaway in 2009. However, by 2016, it became apparent that this little oasis was much better associated with exclusivity, and thus it became an adults-only escape. A few years later, this concept of romantic exclusivity was embellished even further by becoming a couples-only hotel and the only one of its kind amidst our other properties.
Whilst the available experiences have changed over the years, from different shows to beachfront bonfires, and more, Beloved Playa Mujeres is now renowned as one of the best hotels in Mexico, and often as one of the most luxurious escapes in the world.

The beginning of Finest Resorts - 2015

Without anywhere to cater to families and guests of all ages, it was time to build something that everyone could enjoy. This was where Finest Playa Mujeres came into play. Welcoming guests since 2015, this all-ages resort became synonymous with both inclusivity and exclusivity, offering family suites, kids clubs, and adults-only hideaways all under the same roof.

The arrival of modern elegance in Punta Cana - 2016

At this point, we already had four hotels and resorts in Mexico that were thriving and successfully giving our guests the excellence they deserve. However, we only had one resort (Excellence Punta Cana) to cater to all of our clients who wanted to experience the Dominican Republic. It was time to expand our Punta Cana offerings with the lavish suites of Excellence El Carmen, which opened in 2016.

A new All Inclusive experience in Jamaica - 2018

Having acquired a secluded peninsula that stretches out into the open ocean of Montego Bay and lies adjacent to the famed luminous lagoon, The Excellence Collection built its first adults-only resort in Jamaica in 2018 with brand new suite concepts. This was the start of Excellence Oyster Bay and opened the way for guests to explore yet another tropical paradise in the Caribbean.

Finest Resorts arrives in Punta Cana - 2021

With years of planning behind its construction, Finest Punta Cana opened its doors in 2021. However, due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, its opening was accompanied by many safety protocols and precautionary measures, giving guests a safe and indulgent escape during turbulent times of uncertainty.

Once the officials declared an end to this international concern, Finest Punta Cana was able to welcome many more guests to enjoy its warm embrace and has even been awarded for being among the top 10% of All Inclusive resorts. It has since become a shining beacon of comfort for guests of all ages wishing to unwind alongside the turquoise waters and golden sands of Punta Cana.

Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres 2025

25 years later… from the foundation of The Excellence Collection’s resorts in 2000, arrived a new and exciting contemporary resort neighboring several of our other resorts in Playa Mujeres, Cancun. Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres opened on February 12, 2025, and brought new levels of luxury to the Caribbean. With new experiences, new restaurant and bar concepts, and new types of accommodations, the Innovative Curation of The Excellence Collection continues to create Extraordinary Moments for its guests and a wonderfully working environment for its staff.

Dreaming of soft-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant island culture? The Dominican Republic offers all that and more. Whether you’re planning a friends and family getaway, a romantic escape, or an adventurous solo trip, this Caribbean gem offers something for every kind of traveler. Here’s everything you should know before you go, from the best time to visit the Dominican Republic, to where to stay, what to do, and even how to dance a little merengue before you leave.

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic

The island is blessed with warm, tropical weather year-round, but the best time to visit the Dominican Republic depends on what kind of trip you want.

For sunshine and calm seas, December to April is peak season, ideal for beach days, snorkeling, and resort lounging. For fewer crowds and lower prices, May to November offers great deals and lush, green scenery, though you might encounter brief afternoon showers. Visit in February to attend the lively Dominican Carnival, or in July for the Merengue Festival in Santo Domingo.
No matter when you go, pack sunscreen, light and comfortable clothing, and your sense of adventure.

Cool places to visit in the Dominican Republic

The country is more diverse than many travelers realize. Beyond Punta Cana’s famous beaches, you’ll find mountains, waterfalls, jungles, and colonial charm waiting to be explored.

Punta Cana is perfect for beach lovers and is home to many of the most luxurious Dominican Republic resorts, including Excellence Punta Cana and Finest Punta Cana. A short drive away, the capital city, Santo Domingo, offers a mix of history and culture. Don’t miss the Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with cobblestone streets and 16th-century architecture. A paradise for eco-travelers, the Samaná Peninsula is known for whale watching and hidden beaches. Puerto Plata offers a relaxed coastal vibe and the famous Mount Isabel de Torres cable car.
Each region has its own rhythm, making it worth a return trip to explore different regions of the country.

What to know before you go to the Dominican Republic

Before you pack your bags, here are a few practical travel tips to make your visit smoother:

Dominican Republic currency

The currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso (DOP). U.S. dollars are accepted in many resorts and tourist areas, but it’s a good idea to carry some pesos for local shops and taxis.

Flights to the Dominican Republic

Major international airports like Punta Cana (PUJ) and Santo Domingo (SDQ) have direct flights from many U.S. and Canadian cities, often under four hours from places like Miami or New York.

What time is it in the Dominican Republic?

The island is in Atlantic Standard Time (AST) and does not observe daylight savings, so plan accordingly if you’re traveling from North America or Europe.

Dominican rum

Try a glass of Brugal or Barceló, two of the island’s finest brands. Many resorts offer rum tastings or distillery tours.

Baseball in the Dominican Republic

The sport is a national obsession. If you visit between October and January, catch a local game for an unforgettable experience.

Dancing Merengue in the DR

Merengue is the heartbeat of Dominican music. You’ll hear it everywhere, from beach bars to city squares. Don’t be shy, locals will gladly teach you a few steps.

Cultural tips for the Dominican Republic

Dominicans are warm and social. A friendly “¡Hola!” goes a long way, and tipping service staff (around 10%) is appreciated even in All Inclusive settings.

Group and solo travel in the Dominican Republic

If you’re traveling with friends or family, group travel in the Dominican Republic is easy to coordinate thanks to the country’s All Inclusive resorts, wide beaches, and private group excursions. Excellence Resorts offer special group packages for weddings, reunions, or milestone celebrations.

For those considering solo travel in the Dominican Republic, you’ll find a friendly, welcoming culture and plenty of ways to connect with others, whether through guided tours, local dance lessons, or chatting with vendors at a beach market. As always, stay aware of your surroundings and stick to well-known areas at night, especially in cities.

5 things to do in Punta Cana for adults

If you’re wondering what to do in Punta Cana for adults, the options go well beyond sunbathing.

Take a catamaran cruise with snorkeling stops.

Visit local cigar and rum factories for tastings.

Spend a day at Scape Park, ziplining over tropical canopies.

Everything You Should Know Before Visiting the Dominican Republic

Discover the Dominican Republic’s beaches, culture, and luxury resorts, an ideal escape for relaxation, romance, adventure, and lasting memories.

When planning for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, you may have a lot of different destinations to review and choose from. Therefore, once you come to look at somewhere like Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic which is known for its honeymoon experience, you may wonder if it is really as great as some people make it out to be.
It is understandable that you want the best of the best for your romantic vacation together and that is exactly what you should select for your honeymoon. Therefore, come along as we walk you through the Dominican Republic so you can not only decide whether this is the destination for you and your partner but see how to make the most of an All Inclusive honeymoon in Punta Cana.

What do you want for your honeymoon?

Before you choose Punta Cana as the right honeymoon destination for you, you need to know and understand what it is that you truly want from this time with your spouse-to-be. Furthermore, you may wish to talk over your dreams and expectations with your loved one so that you both can get the ideal romantic vacation that you want.

5 things to expect in the Dominican Republic

Once you have clear in both of your minds and hearts what your dream honeymoon looks like you can then examine Punta Cana honeymoon experiences and see if it ticks all the boxes. Let's now take a look at what the Dominican Republic has to offer you so you can see how it fares alongside your wishlist.

1) The best beaches in the Caribbean

Currently, the Dominican Republic has been awarded the status of 24 blue flag beaches. What does this mean? Well, the criteria for selecting a blue flag beach require that the sand be kept clean and free of debris, that the surrounding environment is kept in pristine conditions, that it is a safe and good place for visitors, and that the water is of the highest quality.
A simplification of this status is to say that both the sands and sea have to be superlative and of the highest kind and order surpassing all others. With the best and most coveted beaches in the Caribbean, certainly, these are places where it is worth celebrating a honeymoon together.

2) Some of the most spectacular sunsets

Another thing that the Dominican Republic is known for is its spectacular sunsets. If you are there at the right time you can see incredible skies with the person you love and can take some extraordinary photos for your honeymoon.
If a sunrise or sunset is your idea of a romantic moment that you wish to share, then this may be a great option for your vacation.

3) Luxurious All Inclusive honeymoon resorts

Specifically honing in on Punta Cana honeymoons, there is an abundance of all-inclusive resorts for your love. This allows you both to get pampered to the extreme whilst indulging in everything that your heart desires throughout your vacation.
If you choose to stay in Excellence El Carmen you can even book a honeymoon suite that has access to the pool whilst remaining only a couple of steps away from the beach.

4) Tropical island tranquility for two

Though the Dominican Republic might not have as many activities as somewhere like Cancun, it thrives on the peace and tranquility of a true tropical island. In this paradise of serenity, you can take a proper break by the ocean and let your mind wander into a state of calm.
Take advantage of the beachfront lifestyle in this destination and just listen to the gentle rolling of the waves and the light swaying of the palms.

5) Wonderful year-round weather

Lastly, something that Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is famous for is its perfect weather throughout the year. Whilst some destinations may have a few months of summer, this little island has sunshine and idyllic temperatures almost all the time.
This makes it an easy choice for sun seekers who want to enjoy some warmer weather as you are practically guaranteed to get the sunny bliss that you desire.

Is Punta Cana right for your honeymoon?

In the end, only you can answer the question regarding the best destination for your honeymoon. But now you know what sorts of things to expect here and what kind of experience you are likely to receive.
If you want a Caribbean destination with sunshine, sunsets, stunning beaches, tranquility, and incredible resorts with luxury suites, then this may be a good place for you. If this is the case, you may wish to keep reading to see how to make your honeymoon in Punta Cana even more romantic.

6 ways to enhance your honeymoon in Punta Cana!

Is a honeymoon just a vacation that is taken after the wedding? For some, it might be. However, being the first trip you take as a wedded couple, you should endeavor to put as much effort into the honeymoon experience as possible.
By tweaking your plans and going for that little bit extra you can make your Punta Cana honeymoon something better than any other vacation. In these first moments of your marriage, this time together can be beyond your most elaborate dreams.

1 - Start by planning ahead

Just like you took the time to plan for your wedding day, you should also do the same for your blissful break in the Dominican Republic. If you leave it all until the last minute, it is going to be a lot harder to ensure that this escape is much more special than just a romantic vacation.
However, with time, planning, and preparation, you can select the best resort for your honeymoon in Punta Cana, and select activities for your ultimate honeymoon experience.

2 - Escape to the best paradise

When choosing where to go in Punta Cana, let your fantasies unravel and your imagination unwind until you find the peaceful paradise of your dreams.

You are not simply searching for somewhere nice or comfortable but rather you want the top-tier spot with the best views of the best beaches and the best environment for your love. By going above and beyond to select something far superior to your usual vacation choice you can set this vacation apart and enjoy something above the curve.
In addition to Excellence El Carmen that was previously mentioned, another great option for a truly special honeymoon is Excellence Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Known for its extremely privileged beachfront location, its Bespoke Service, and incredibly high standards, it is the ultimate honeymoon resort.
Alternatively, if you are looking for an all ages option, you might consider the luxury of Finest Punta Cana.

3 - Search for contemporary luxury

Start to think about the kind of honeymoon suite that you wish to wake up in every morning. What kind of restaurants do you want your honeymoon dates in? What kind of amenities would you both enjoy? And what kind of service would make you feel like royalty?
Once you have answered these questions you will likely realize that staying somewhere with grandeur and luxury where your every need is taken care of is going to change your honeymoon for the better. Avoid looking for somewhere to sleep and instead search for a resort or hotel that offers an opulent experience.

4 - Avoid the busy areas

Vacations are full of activities and exciting discoveries and to a large extent, many honeymoons are too. However, this trip is designed to have private and intimate moments as a couple so the crowded and more touristy areas may not suit the vibe for your honeymoon.
Instead, you should seek out some more special and secluded spots for your love and find activities and adventures where you can focus on each other without too much noise or interruption.

5 - Save social media until the end

In this budding age of technology, it has become normal and maybe even expected to start posting your vacation photos as soon as possible so that everyone can see where you are and what you are up to. Whilst this may be perfectly fine for a normal vacation, during a honeymoon you might consider disconnecting for a while. But, why?
Well, the attention that you give to your social media account and your online friends is time that is taken away from your partner. Rather than living in the moment with the person you most love, you could easily find yourself socializing with your friends or family and following the normal trends of a standard vacation.
Instead, take all the photos and videos you want but wait until the end to share them so that your full attention can be on your spouse.

6 - Do something truly unforgettable

Another way to set your honeymoon apart from a standard vacation is to do something absolutely amazing together. Search for an experience that both of you can enjoy and that will take your breath away.

Though this may vary from one couple to another, it could be a day in the spa, an underwater encounter, or even a romantic dinner on one of the best beaches of Punta Cana. Whatever you choose, select something incredible that you will never forget and it will be a point of remembrance from your Caribbean honeymoon.

Ever wondered what a honeymoon in Punta Cana is actually like? Find out everything you need to know in this article for the ultimate couples experience.

There is nothing more relaxing, romantic, or serene than sitting back on the beach with a cocktail in your hand as you watch the sun go down. However, if this is your idea of an Extraordinary Moment you likely want to find the best spot to see the most beautiful and breathtaking sunset in the Caribbean.
As you scour the tropics for the best destination we want to show you what to look for, and recommend some of the best sunsets in the Caribbean.

Be ready for the golden hour

The golden hour is a term that many photographers use to describe the hour before sunset and after sunrise. These are the moments when the light is best for the ultimate vacation photos and makes for some stunning memories that you can share with your friends and family back home.
Due to the changes in the atmosphere a sunset can sometimes be hard to predict. Though in the Caribbean, most sunsets are estimated to take place between 5:00-7:30 pm, the exact time can vary depending on the exact location and time of year.
This is why we recommend doing two things. First, investigate the estimated time of sunset in the destination of your choice. This can be done by looking online or asking your concierge. Next, go to your preferred spot to watch the sunset during the golden hour.
This hour gives you a bit of leeway with the timing so that you do not miss out on this incredible experience. Sunsets in the Caribbean are among the best in the world but the closer you are to the equator the shorter they last. Be prepared that it will drop from full sun to complete darkness within a very short time.

What Caribbean island has the best sunset?

This is extremely subjective and can vary depending on the atmospheric conditions and timing. However, there are some places that just seem to always get amazing and astonishing sunsets.
One of these places is Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This is the prime Caribbean getaway where you can get the true island experience, indulge in an elegant escape with some of the most sumptuous local cocktails, and delight in the 21 miles of golden sandy beaches. You certainly will not struggle to find a nice spot to watch the sun go down in Punta Cana.
When you look online for “Punta Cana sunsets” you will be supplied with an almost endless amount of amazing picture perfect settings where visitors have been able to take in the awe inspiring wonder of this natural beauty.
Yes, you can enjoy dreamy sunsets in Finest Punta Cana, Excellence Punta Cana, or Excellence El Carmen where the staff will be happy to help you to make the most of the true Dominican Republic sunset experience.

How to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets in the Caribbean

Your vacation memories on a paradise island are made up of the moments that take your breath away. How can you take full advantage of the fleeting minutes as you watch the resplendent landscape transform before your eyes?
Well, this is really up to you and will highly depend on your personal preferences. However, there are a few things that you might want to ask yourself:

Could you make this moment even more impactful by making a grand announcement or proposal?

Who would you like to share this moment with?

Could you make this moment more romantic by preparing something special for your partner?

Do you want to bring a camera so that you can immortalize the memory, or would you prefer to keep this special moment to yourself?

This All Inclusive resort is well known to be an all suite destination. Each suite is tailored toward an oversized space where you can enjoy the comforts of a luxury area that is just for you. However, some suites are definitely better than others.

Have a look at all the options and book the suite that best suits your desires. Sometimes the best suites get snapped up quickly so you may want to book ahead for the best suite categories.

But rather than waiting until the last minute, it is much better to start planning your trip in advance so you can have everything ready, you can get the best deals and you can have something wonderful to look forward to.
Additionally, since the end of the year can get rather busy, booking ahead ensures that you have a lot more options to choose from and a lot more availability. It also allows you to take the time you need to get everything ready and in order so you do not have to do a mad dash just before you head to the airport.
Join us as we show you all the insider tips on how to best organize your vacations on time for the holidays.

Choose where you want to go

Your All Inclusive experience is going to vary greatly depending on where you choose to go. The tropical destination of your choice should be somewhere you enjoyed before or somewhere new that you would love to try out.
The culture, the language, the food, the lifestyle, and the accessibility are all things that should be taken into consideration. Once you narrow down your choices, you then have the starting point for your Caribbean vacation plan.
If you are overwhelmed by the abundance of options then here are a few options that you might want to consider:

Resorts in Cancun, Mexico.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

Excellence Riviera Cancun

Finest Playa Mujeres

Beloved Playa Mujeres

Resorts in Punta Cana, The Dominican Republic.

Excellence Punta Cana

Excellence El Carmen

Finest Punta Cana

Resorts in Oyster Bay, Jamaica.

Excellence Oyster Bay

Think about why you are going

Your reasons behind your stay will determine what kind of choices and selections you make from here on. Maybe you are looking for excitement, tranquility, family time, romance, or some time to yourself?
Whichever your preference, write it down and continue to refer back to it throughout the rest of your decision making process so that you can be certain that everything you select aligns with your principal vacation goal.

Plan out your desired activities

Now you know where and why you are going, you should pick activities accordingly that match your vacation approach. It is much easier to plan these out in advance than to arrive and have to then figure out what you are going to do.
You may wish just to chill out on the beach and relax in the indulgence of your All Inclusive resort. If so, then you can mostly skip this step though we encourage you to still review all the amenities and activities that the resort offers within their property.

Check the dates and deals

The sooner you book, the longer you are going to have something nice to look forward to. Additionally, you can scan ahead for the best deals and rates for your ultimate Caribbean vacation.
Another advantage is that there will be more suites available and therefore more suite options to choose from allowing you to book the type of accommodation that suits you.
When you do start reviewing prices and offers, it is usually best to book directly from the resort you are staying in, and you may also wish to sign up for their newsletter where they send emails with special offers and deals on a regular basis.

Decide how long to stay

This can depend on your budget. However, it can also vary depending on the purpose of your stay and the number of activities that you want to accomplish. Once you decide on the necessary time you need, it might be worthwhile to add a day or two more just to make sure you have enough time to relax and unwind.

Book your flight and accommodation

Now it gets real. You are finally doing it. Book your flight and accommodation or book them together as part of a package deal. This can make things a lot easier and can often result in a better overall rate.
This is also the time that you should look at getting transportation planned for your journey from and to the airport. This is something you may also be able to do via a package or through the resort itself.

Get your sunshine kit ready

Now everything is set up, all that remains is to get the right clothes ready, pack some sunblock and make any other necessary preparations. You may want to make sure you have the vacation time reserved from your work, organize for someone to care for your home and figure out who is going to take you to the airport.
This is also your chance to go shopping, pick out a good book you want to read, try out some sunglasses, and get ready for the amazing trip ahead of you.

Enjoy your stay in a tropical paradise

Planning your relaxing holiday season getaway well in advance gives you so much more flexibility, more affordable rates, and a wider variety of choices. So do not hesitate. Book your tropical vacation in any of our eight All Inclusive resorts while time is still on your side.
Not long from now, you will be chilling in the Caribbean with stunning ocean views and bespoke service that tailors everything to your desires. Organize it now and get your vacation relaxation during the holidays.

How to Organize Your Vacations in Time For The Holidays in One of Our All Inclusive Resorts

Discover how to make your holiday season vacations in the Caribbean all that they can be. Plan ahead and enjoy your stay in an All Inclusive resort.

If you're planning a vacation to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, you've probably seen adorable photos of tiny monkeys on travelers' Instagram and Facebook posts. These playful primates have become one of the region's most popular wildlife experiences.
While they're often associated with the Dominican Republic, there's an interesting fact that surprises many visitors: squirrel monkeys are not native to the Dominican Republic. The monkeys you'll meet in Punta Cana were introduced to specialized wildlife parks, where they live in protected environments designed to mimic their natural habitats.
Here's everything you need to know before meeting these remarkable little animals.

What is a squirrel monkey?

A squirrel monkey is a small monkey that is indigenous to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is known for its expressive face, energetic personality, and remarkable agility. They have bright eyes, short golden fur, and long tails.
Although several species exist, you may hear about the Central American squirrel monkey, the Bolivian squirrel monkey, or the black-capped squirrel monkey. Each belongs to the same biological classification, but lives in different parts of Central and South America.
These monkeys naturally inhabit tropical rainforests, where they spend nearly all of their time moving through the forest canopy in search of food.

Are squirrel monkeys native to the Dominican Republic?

Despite their popularity in Punta Cana, squirrel monkeys are not native to the Dominican Republic.
The island of Hispaniola, which includes both the Dominican Republic and Haiti, does not have native monkey populations today. Instead, the Punta Cana monkeys that visitors encounter live in carefully managed wildlife parks where trained staff oversee their care and conservation.
Because they were introduced rather than naturally occurring, seeing these monkeys can be considered a unique wildlife encounter rather than a glimpse of the country's native fauna.
Where can you see monkeys in the Dominican Republic?
The best-known destination is Monkeyland Punta Cana, where visitors can interact with friendly squirrel monkeys in a lush tropical setting. The park is designed to provide a safe, natural environment for the animals while allowing guests to observe them up close under professional supervision.
These experiences typically include guided tours, educational presentations, and opportunities to learn about primate behavior, conservation, and responsible wildlife tourism.

Where to stay to see squirrel monkeys

If you're staying at Excellence Punta Cana or Finest Punta Cana, adding a monkey encounter to your itinerary is easy. Both All Inclusive luxury resorts are located in the Uvero Alto area, and many excursion providers offer transportation directly from the resorts to places where you can see these monkeys for yourself. It's a nice way to experience another side of the Dominican Republic before returning to enjoy the resorts' beaches, pools, restaurants, and world-class amenities.

Guests at Excellence Punta Cana often enjoy pairing the excursion with a relaxing adults-only vacation, while families staying at Finest Punta Cana frequently find that seeing the playful squirrel monkeys becomes one of the most memorable experiences of their trip.

6 facts about squirrel monkeys

1) How large are they?

One reason visitors immediately fall in love with these primates is their tiny stature. Adults generally measure between 10 and 14 inches (25 to 35 centimeters) in body length. Their tails are even longer than their bodies, often reaching another 14 to 17 inches (35 to 43 centimeters).
Interestingly, they don't use their tails to hang from branches like some monkey species. Instead, they help maintain balance while the monkeys leap effortlessly from tree to tree. Their small size allows them to navigate dense rainforest canopies with incredible speed and agility.

2) How much do squirrel monkeys weigh?

Despite their energetic personalities, these primates are surprisingly lightweight. Most adult squirrel monkeys weigh between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds (0.7 to 1.1 kilograms).
Females are generally a bit smaller than males, although both sexes are exceptionally agile. Their light bodies make it easy for them to travel quickly through thin branches that larger monkeys couldn't safely use.

3) What do squirrel monkeys eat?

In the wild, squirrel monkeys enjoy an incredibly varied diet. They're considered omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.
Their favorite foods include:

Fruits

Berries

Flowers

Seeds

Nuts

Insects

Caterpillars

Spiders

Small lizards

Bird eggs

Because insects provide an excellent source of protein, squirrel monkeys spend much of their day searching tree bark, leaves, and branches for tasty bugs.
In managed wildlife parks like those found near Punta Cana, trained caretakers provide balanced diets that closely resemble what the monkeys would naturally consume.

4) How long do squirrel monkeys live?

In the wild, squirrel monkeys typically live between 15 and 20 years, although many face challenges such as predators, habitat loss, and disease. Under professional care in accredited wildlife facilities, they may live into their early twenties thanks to regular veterinary care, nutritious diets, and protection from natural threats.
Their lifespan depends greatly on the quality of their environment and overall health.

5) Are squirrel monkeys friendly?

The answer is yes, with an important distinction. Squirrel monkeys are naturally curious, intelligent, and highly social animals. In wildlife parks where they're accustomed to human visitors, they often climb onto guests' shoulders or heads while searching for treats provided during supervised experiences.
However, they're still wild animals rather than pets. Their friendly behavior comes from careful training, positive reinforcement, and regular interaction with experienced handlers, not domestication. Visitors should always follow park guidelines, avoid sudden movements, and never attempt to feed or touch the monkeys unless instructed to do so.
Respectful interactions help ensure both visitors and monkeys have a safe, enjoyable experience.

6) Why are they called squirrel monkeys?

If you've ever watched these tiny primates dart through the trees, you'll quickly understand the answer.
Their name comes from their remarkable resemblance to squirrels. Like squirrels, they have:

Small, lightweight bodies

Long tails

Lightning-fast movements

Exceptional climbing skills

Constant curiosity

Their playful behavior and quick movements through tree branches reminded early naturalists of squirrels, leading to the common name that has remained for centuries.

3 different species of squirrel monkeys

Although many visitors simply refer to them as squirrel monkeys, several species exist across the Americas.

Central American Squirrel Monkey

The Central American squirrel monkey is found primarily in Costa Rica and Panama. It's among the rarest squirrel monkey species and inhabits tropical forests close to the Pacific coast.
Conservation efforts continue to protect its shrinking habitat.

Bolivian Squirrel Monkey

The Bolivian squirrel monkey lives throughout parts of Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru. It occupies rainforests, seasonally flooded forests, and river systems across the Amazon Basin.
Like other squirrel monkey species, it's highly social and usually travels in large groups.

Black-Capped Squirrel Monkey

The black-capped squirrel monkey is easily recognized by the darker coloring around the top of its head.
Native to portions of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and neighboring countries, this species also thrives in tropical forests and spends nearly all its time in the trees searching for fruit and insects.

Tips for visiting Punta Cana monkeys

If you're planning to see the famous Punta Cana monkeys, a little preparation can make your experience even more enjoyable.

Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting a little dirty, since the monkeys may climb onto your shoulders or sit on your head. Leave loose jewelry, dangling earrings, and sunglasses in your room or in a secure bag, as curious monkeys love investigating shiny objects.
Most importantly, follow your guide's instructions at all times. These guidelines help protect both the animals and visitors while ensuring everyone enjoys a memorable encounter.
Consider making plans early in your vacation. Not only does this help secure your preferred time, but it also gives you plenty of opportunities afterward to share your photos and stories while relaxing back at your resort.
Spending time surrounded by squirrel monkeys is an unforgettable addition to any Punta Cana vacation. Reserve a stay at Excellence Punta Cana or Finest Punta Cana, along with an easy natural wildlife excursion that you will never forget.

I won't tell you which one you should choose for your next escape, but I will tell you what each of these vacation options provides, the differences between tropical island and peninsula getaways, and where you can go in the Caribbean to experience the best of both of these ambiances. Sound good? Indeed.
Together, we shall find your ultimate tropical paradise destination.

Let's look at a tropical Island escape!

What counts as an island? Well, they come in all shapes and sizes, literally. An island can be a huge landmass like Australia, a smaller landmass like Jamaica, or even a tiny little space of land sticking out from the sea with just enough room for a couple of palm trees to grow out of.

Being an island means that you have water on all 4 sides which can often lead to lots of coastal and beachfront areas, stunning views of the endless ocean, and a feeling of seclusion and quiet island lifestyle that allows you to relax, feel the Caribbean vibes and unwind in comfort.

What about visiting a Caribbean peninsula?

So what is a peninsula and what is it like? They actually share many similarities to islands since they have water on 3 sides and come in many different forms. For example, the state of Florida is known to be a peninsula, but a peninsula could also be just a tiny little outcrop of land that sticks out like a finger that points into the ocean.
Peninsulas have the convenience of being attached to the main areas where you can access lots of activities and visit other places. It has the privacy and seclusion aspect without cutting you off from the rest of the world.

Why the destination matters…

As has been mentioned, there is a lot of variety for you to choose from and you want to make the best choice. After all, choosing an island vacation could mean you end up visiting a cold breezy iceberg up at the North Pole, and choosing a peninsula could just mean ending up in the same country you live in. This is why the destination of your island or peninsula makes all the difference.
To get the tropical island paradise vibes, the feel good feelings, the quiet seclusion, and the exquisite relaxation, you need to find the best Caribbean island or the most out of this world peninsula available.

Want to know where they are? Come on, I will show you a couple…

Did someone say a “Tropical Island Paradise”?

When people think of what the best island offerings include, many people turn to their favorite destination… Punta Cana. Here the lifestyle is peaceful, the beaches are some of the best in the world, and the experience is simply perfection.
For true tropical island enjoyment, look at the adults only resorts of Excellence El Carmen, Excellence Punta Cana, and the all ages resort of Finest Punta Cana.

Escape to a peninsula on a peninsula!

The Yucatan Peninsula is a large portion of Mexico that houses famous sites like Chichen Itza and the Cancun Hotel Zone. But did you know that there is a peninsula on this peninsula that you can visit? Its called Playa Mujeres.

If you want the Mexican peninsula experience but want the convenience of being just a short drive away from all the mainland attractions, have a look at Beloved Playa Mujeres for couples, Excellence Playa Mujeres for adults, and Finest Playa Mujeres for all ages. Alternatively, if one large peninsula is enough, then you may wish to look at the slightly more secluded adults only Excellence Riviera Cancun.

How about having the best of both worlds?

What's that? A peninsula on a Caribbean paradise island? Yes. On the beautiful island of Jamaica, there is a stunning little stretch of land in Montego Bay that encloses a glistening lagoon and overlooks the gorgeous azure.
For privacy, sophistication, and the best of both island and peninsula offerings, take a look at the adults only All Inclusive escape of Excellence Oyster Bay.

Figuring out which option is your favorite

Some people say “There is only one way to find out” meaning that you need to do it or experience it for yourself and then you will know. Whilst it holds true that going to each of these destinations is by far the most reliable and most enjoyable way of finding out which one you like most, I'm here to try and help you decide before you book.
Many of these locations offer luxury, sunshine, beaches, and unique tropical vacation experiences. But each of them has their strengths and their specialties. This is why you must ask yourself “What is the most important part of the Caribbean destination experience for me?”

If it is easy access to mainland activities, then visit Playa Mujeres.

If you want authentic experiences then escape to the Riviera Maya.

If it is tropical vibes and beautiful beaches, travel to Punta Cana.

If it is privacy and seclusion you desire, then head to Montego Bay.

Once you have the destination, all you need to do is start looking at the suites, restaurants, and resort amenities and see which style suits your desires. Either way, whether you stay on a peninsula or book an island vacation, you are sure to find out which one is your favorite and you may discover a paradise that you want to return to again and again.
Have a great trip!
